Hawaiian Visitor Impressed With North A world-wide traveller. Captain J. J. Darlington, of Honolulu, who has been holidaying with his brother. Mr George Darlington, of Park Street. Hikurangi, expresses himself as greatly taken with Northland. He has a particularly good word to say for Whangarei, which he regarded ns a really “go-ahead” town. Coupled with its business possibilities is the charm of its natural scenery, which, he says, is unsurpassed among New Zealand towns which ho has visited. Captain Darlington has left for Rotorua and Hamilton, but will return to Hikurangi before leaving New Zealand by the Monterey on February 7. As a captain in the United States Marines, he has been stationed in many parts, and is a most interesting conversationalist.
Lodge Social Evening The rain which fell early in the evening did not mar the success of the Ngatoa Rcbekah social and dance, held in the Parish Hall on Monday evening. There was quite a good attendance and a pleasurable time was spent. Vocal items were contributed by Mr T. Edgar and Alma Sherman, and Mrs Clark recited. Accompaniments and dance music were played by Mrs Sparks and Mr Owen D. Price. Once again the Monte Carlo was won by Thelma Adams and Mr VV. In cas, while the jr ize for a statue one-step went to Miss E. McKenzie and Mr R. Smith. The M.C. for the evening was Mr Owen Price.
West well’s Rink To Defend Bowling Crown Hikurangi followers of the biasedball game are taking a particular interest in the annual tournament of the Whangarei Club, which will open tomorrow.
Great things are expected of the rink comprising J. Johnson, R. Ackers. J. Star!; and H. Westwell (s). At the Anniversary tourney last year, Westwell skipped the identical team to victory, and will thus defend the cup presented for annual competition by Dr. J. G. Campbell. A condition of the trophy is that it must be defended by a rink from the same club which won the previous year, and so Hikurangi’s representation is in the best of hands. The second string from the local club will comprise R. Sissons, G. Ward, R. Scott and R. Nesbitt. This season, Nesbitt has been meeting with quite a deal of success in tournament skipping, and is also still a “two-lifer” in the singles’ championship of his own club. Purging The Roll When criticism is levelled at “apathetic” citizens because of small polls at local body elections, the question should be asked: “When were the rolls last purged?” It is remarkable how, in the course of a few years, people Who no longer exist, or those who have leng since left the district, clutter up the records.
The town clerk, Mr C. E. O’Callaghan, is rediscovering this truth while purging the roll for the Hikurangi Town Board district, a work which is now well advanced.
Already approximately 200 names have been deleted as no longer em titled to a vote. There have been additions, of course, which will compensate in a small measure.
