HEAVY FIGHTING IN ABYSSINIA

(Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 26. The Abyssinian Legation in London has issued a statement that violent opposition and fighting are going on in north and north-west Abyssinia.;/ Attempts of Italian flying and motorised columns to recapture lost positions have met, at the most, only temporary success. Three battalions of Eritrean troops deserted, and' 5993 Italians and askaris have been killed in engagements in the past two months. Abyssinian losses were equally as great. Abyssinians are masters of the situation in many districts. The statement alleges that following non-observance of certain privileges, 18 Italian officers* were massacred at Debra Markos, capital of Gojam Province. From 30 to 40 Italian planes have since daily bombed towns and villages in the province as a reprisal.
