AUCKLAND HOSPITAL COSTS RISE 25 P.C.

[Special To “Northern Advocate ”l AUCKLAND. This Day. Increased expenses, higher wages and costs have resulted in a net deficiency of £23.740 being recorded by the Auckland Hospital Board. At the same time last year, the nine-monthly deficiency was £ 16,932. Excess payments were stated at yesterday's board meeting to be due to increased staff and wages and rising prices.

There was an increase of £3 1/8 in the case of each patient treated, and this was declared to be the direct result of rising prices, reduced hours and increased wages. “Apart from exercising the strictest economy, the board has no means of combating the increase, which can be safely estimated as a permanent rise of over 25 per cent, the report continues.

An increase in patients’ fees from 12/- to 15/- per day would not cover the cost of maintenance, it was stated.
