BORTHWICK MEN RESUME WORK
[Per Press Association. Copyright .] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
Chains were manned at Thomas Eorthwick’s Belfast Freezing Works this morning, although the dispute which caused the cessation of activities yesterday remained unsettled. According to the workers’ delegates, there were sufficient men available this morning to provide the full quota on the chains. This position enabled work to be resumed, and an undertaking was given that the additional man, who was to be employed on the chain by the company, was not to start work until the dispute had been settled.
No Comment, Mr A. C. Wells, the company’s manager, was not inclined to comment on the situation this morning. He admitted the men had returned to work, and said they had manned the chains without a full quota. The attitude of the company towards the dspute had not been decided, but it intended to negotiate with the workers through the local disputes committee. Company’s Demand. Yesterday, the company demanded that an additional man be employed on the chain, which would have brought the quota to 36. The men maintained that this action was an attempt to rec.uce their earning capacity, and that the previous quota of 35 was sufficient for the work.
In the new award announced to-day, provision is made for a maximum cmota of 35.
