Clipper Delays Start From Pago Pago
[Special To “Northern Advocate'’] AUCKLAND. This Day. Fan-American officials at Auckland state that the Samoan Clipper did not leave Pago Pago early this morning on the lust stage of its commercial flight to Auckland. The officials are awaiting a message, which may give the reason for the delay. # Fending tlic receipt of the further message, it is expected that the Clipper will leave for Auckland early tomorrow morning. An earlier message stated that it was expected that the Pan-American Airway Samoan Clipper would roach Auckland from Pago Pago, American Samoa, at about 5 o’clock this afterneon. After leaving Kingman Reef at 4.35 a.m. yesterday, the Clipper arrived at Pago Pago at 4.56 p.m. New Zealand time.
According to the forecast prepared from weather maps last night by Mr E. E. Buxton. Pan-American Airways meteorologist in Auckland, there should be no obstacles in the Clipper's path from Pago Pago to Auckland today. Generally, favourable’ conditions with light winds were predicted.
Freight Hates
The freight rates fixed by the company over the new commercial course were made available to-day. The rates are fixed in dollars and cents, and, with the approximate New Zealand values in parenthesis, they are as follows: —
Auckland to Pago Pago. 1 dollar 31 cents (6/6) per lb: to Honolulu. 2 dollars 58 cents (12/11); and to Alameda, San Francisco Bay. 3 dollars 45 cents (17/3).
In addition, there are small charges as on other of the company’s routes for “carriage,” which is based on Customs valuation and insurance.
Movie Film in Cargo
It was learned today that in addition to the typewriter and radio set which are being carried to Auckland merchants, the cargo includes the first movie film brought by air to New Zealand. It is a three-reel record of the bombing of the American gunboat Panay on the Yangtse River.
