VISITORS to Northland frequently pass through Whangarei without stopping, or, if they do stop, it is only for a very brief period. This, we are told, is firstly, because they do not think there is anything to see here, and, secondly, because there are no regular trips to places of interest. The Whangarei Harbour has its beaches, its bush, the grandeur of its scenery at the Heads, Peach Cove, Manaia, The Lion, Reotahi, Parua Bay, Urquhart’s Bay, Ocean Beach, Tamaterau, Waikaraka, Manganese Point, One Tree Point, McGregor’s Bay, to name a few outstanding points. Where are more charming sights to be found? Where is there better fishing, swimming, boating? Boat excursions to these places were once a regular, thing— but not so today. Why? Because better roads to other beaches have attracted people, elsewhere. The beauty and grandeur of Whangarei Harbour, however, still remains, and the Heads, in particular, are described by the stranger as, Wonderful Magnificent.” ,
Then there is the countryside. Where, for instance, can be found a more beautiful rural and coastal run than that through Tikipunga, Mt. Denby, the Whangarffi Falls, Gleubervie, Kiripaka, Ngunguru, Tutukaka, Matapouri.; returning via Hikurangi, taking in the Hikurangi Limestone Rocks, Kauri, Ruatangata, the Springs, Mr Jounneaux’s lime rocks, and back to Whangarei? It would be difficult to imagine more beautiful or pleasantly-situated countryside than that scanned by the traveller on this route, on the properties owned by Mr Hilton Hutchinson, Mr Ellin, Mr Johnson, Mr Finlayson, and Colonel Ho]gate. Again, for glimpses of rich pastoral land, well kept, bountifully wooded and bounded by neat stonewalls, a run through Maunu, overlooking Whatatiri, returning through the wilder Kaigoose Valley, would be hard to beat; while a motor trip through Ruatangata to Puma is equally delightful.
The arrangement of regular excursions to these places during the month of January would be a sound investment mi the part of Whangarei businessmen. Many, even of our own citizens, have never been given the opportunity of participating in such trips with those who are holidaymaking in the district. It is a great pity that visitors should pass through the district without haying been made acquainted with the sights and scenes mentioned above. They are all the' poorer for missing these experiences. And so is Whangarei for neglecting to cater for their wants.
