HAS SOLVED MYSTERY OF CARBOHYDRATES

(Received 10 a.m.) CALCUTTA, January 9. Professor E. C. Baly, of Liverpool University, told the Science Congress that, after years of research, he had solved the mystery of carbo-hydrates, Which he had established as the basis of all life. Carbo-hydrates, including certain sugars, has been produced from carbondioxide and water, by means of a light process known as photosynthesis. He had proved that the first stage was promoted by blue light and the second by red light. The professor said he had made it possible to short-circuit nature and produce essentials of plant life in the laboratory, eliminating the time factor in the planting and reaping of the crop. The discovery meant that if Britain v/ei-e blockaded in time of war, the nation would not starve.
