“THE TIMES” ON VAN ZEELAND REPORT
(Received 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 10. “The Times” points out that, as a re- v suit of direct consultations, Dr. van Zeeland, ex-Prime Minister of Belgium, will be able to present an agreed report, not an arbitrator’s award. The paper emphasises the possibility of completely separating economic and political question!;, and recalls that the present trade'barriers are a legacy of the 1931 depression.
Emergency self-protective measures and currency regulations tend, in the Jong run, to divide the world into two economic camps. It might be useful if inter-dependence were once again emphasised. This can best be done through , the Bank for International Settlements playing a more active part in the management of exchange equalisation funds.
Some of Dr. van Zeeland’s conclusions, the paper adds, will have to be discussed at an economic conference, for which there will be most careful preparation, a task which will be reached through diplomatic conversations.
