ITALY’S NAVAL REPLY TO BRITAIN, U.S.

(Received 2.30 p.m.) ROME, January 7. Italy is immediately starting construction of two 35,000-ton battleships and a number of smaller craft, including submarines and 12 scout ships. The increased naval building completely surprised official circles. ][t was believed there was no need for expansion at present. After completion of the programme in three or four years, Italy’s naval strength will consist of eight battleships, seven 10.000-ton cruisers, 12 light cruisers, 68 destroyers and scouts, 32 torpedo boats and over 100 submarines.

“Lavore Fascista” says the new programme is a reply to Britain and America, and adds that Italy must prepare to face any designs against her.
