UKRAINIAN FINANCIER DIES IN BELGIAN GAOL

(Received 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 6. Tho “Daily Telegraph’s” Brussels correspondent says Julius Barmat, 49, Ukrianian financier, recently extradited from Holland at the request of the Belgium authorities, died suddenly in his cell. He suffered from his heart, for which he was attended by the prison doctor. The authorities have asked for an autopsy. The death has caused concern to legal authorities, as Barmat was to be tried for alleged misappropriation of £1,090,000 from the National Bank. He was also to be a witness in the case inaugurated as the result of the Rexist Campaign, alleging that Dr. van Zeeland, ex-Prime Minister, and M. Franck, Governor of the National Bank, must have been aware that Barmat, who was previously convicted for embezzlement in Germany, was an international swindler. M. Franck was deeply affected by the violence of the campaign and died on Monday last.
