CENTRAL EUROPE IS STILL FREEZING
(Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, January 6*. Central Europe is still freezing, and many parts are snowbound. Four men, who were attempting to cross a lagoon in Venice by gondola, are trapped in the ice and are in danger of freezing to death. Efforts are being made to secure a powerful naval boat to push its way through the ice to the rescue. Germany has experienced the heaviest fall of snow for nine years. Many rivers are frozen, thus holding up shipping.
Rumania’s train services are disorganised by snow. Wolves, driven frantic by hunger, have attacked villages and have even appeared in the suburbs of Bucharest. Austria,- Hungary and Czechoslovakia are covered by ice, and the Danube is thickening, shipping being suspended.
