HEAVY LOSSES IN FIRE AT RONGOTEA

A fire at Rongotea, 15 miles from Palmerston North, completely destroyed James Aird's drapery establishment and dwelling, and I. C. Eades’ billiard saloon and hairdresser’s shop. When first noticed at 11 o’clock, the fire had a strong hold, and, in the absence of fire-fighting facilities, efforts were directed to save the adjoining premises by a bucket brigade. The outbreak, the origin of which is unknown, completely destroyed building which were part of the original shopping area, and it is anticipated that the losses will be heavy.
