MATADOR PLAYS WHILE MEXICO CITY SHAKES
MEXICO CITY, January 3. While an earthquake swayed the high steel and concrete structure round the arena, a matador, Liborio Ruiz, calmly played and killed a bull, thus preventing panic among the 24,000 spectators. He has been hailed as a hero. Pretending to ignore the shocks, the matador held the crowd, which seemed to be gripped between terror and fascination. The band aided by playing loudly. The bull was slain and the earthquake ceased simultaneously. Only a handful of spectators departed. There have been approximately 200 tremors within a fortnight.
