Both SIDES AFTER OUTRIGHT VICTORY
PLUNKET SHIELD
[Special To “ Northern Advocate ”1 CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
With both sides hopeful of an outright win today, considerable interest was takei? in the resumption of play in the Plunket Shield match between Otago and Canterbury.
With one wicket down for 105 in the second innings, Otago were hopeful of adding another 140 runs before putting Canterbury in on a worn wicket, with just over 200 runs to get in three hours.
Uttley (74) and Robertson. (14) started off again confidently. The captain's fighting knock came to a close in Burtt’s fifth over. Otago’s total was then 127 for two, the partnership having added 90.
There was keen disappointment when Uttley was dismissed leg before wicket, 12 runs short of the century, as many would have liked to sele him follow up his 145 at Carisbrook last February with another three-figure innings against Canterbury.
There was again little bright cricket in the second day’s play and when Canterbury continued its innings, which was postponed on Monday because of rain.
The pitch was soft and the outfield slow. The Canterbury batsmen played the bowling of Dunning and Elmes carefully. These two bowled almost unchanged throughout the rest of the innings.
Menzies and Stokes, the not out batsmen, carried Canterbury’s first day’s score of 58 for two wickets to 105 before the former was caught and bowled by Dunning. Stokes was quietly confident aixd took no risks, scoring steadily with well-placed shots.
The brightest moments of the innings were provided by Hadlee, who batted freely and aggressively. The best bowler was Dunning, who bowled unchanged from, one end, sending down 33.6 overs for six wickets and 51 runs.
