There was an attendance of 18,000 at Epsom yesterday for the opening of the Auckland Trotting Club’s summer carnival. The course was fast. The totalisator handled £52,578/10/, compared with £48,525 for the first day last year, an increase of £4053/10/. Unfortunately, spectators did not see the Australian crack pacer, Lawn Derby, at his best, for he broke badly during the running of the Cup and put himself out of the contest. His stablemate, Speedy Boy, was not paraded. Concluding results: —
