A Japanese Railway Mystery
The length of the lines in the Japanese railways has been found to contract several miles per year. The effect has nothing to do with normal expansion and contraction from heat and cold.
It is a mystery at present where the lost length goes, but the most likely theory is that the constant vibration set up by trains gradually breaks down the original stresses within the steel and enables the particles to lie closer together.
