Post Entries To Be Received For N.A. Tennis T ourney

WHILST ENTRIES WERE DISAPPOINTING IN SOME CASES—PARTICULARLY FOR LADIES’ EVENTS—IN THE CHRISTMAS TOURNEY OF THE NORTH AUCKLAND LAWN TENNIS ASSOCIATION, THE BEST SUPPORT YET ACCORDED THE ASSOCIATION FOR THE BOYS’ EVENT WAS RECEIVED FOR THE UNDER-18 CHAMPIONSHIP,

At a special meeting of the executive last night, entries were discussed and final details for the tourney arranged. A decision was made to extend the closing date until right up to commencement of play, and, consequently, no draw is available to-day.

Any tennis players anxious to compete should communicate with the Match Secretary. Full particulars are given in an advertisement that appears in to-day’s “Advocate.”

Weather Too Hot?

Commenting on entries so far received, the president of the North Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, Mr K. Hayr, remarked that possibly the hot weather accounted for lack of interest in ladies’ and girls’ events. Boys’ matches were particularly well supported and entries for men’s events were quite fair. Competitors in the tourney come from as far south as Auckland, and players from as far north at Kaikohe have signified their intention of participating. The lack of support of local clubs was a little disappointing. Commences on Saturday.

Of two days’ duration, the tourney commences on Saturday next at the Whangarei courts, sa pas: years, 14 courts have been available, but this year only eight courts can be played upon. This has had the effect of somewhat limiting the programme, and in some measure has probably contributed to the smaller number of entries received.

The decision to accept post entries no doubt is a wise one, and, with the ideal setting of the Whangarei courts and a good selection of trophies, it is on the cards that many last-minute entries will be received.

In any case, good sport is assured, and play on Saturday and Monday will appeal to all who enjoy the game for the game’s sake.
