CALMS HOLD UP RACING YACHTS

Yactsmen in the mullet-boat race from Auckland to OncrahL during the week-end were perhaps the only men in the province who found fault with the weather. ■

Leaving Auckland at 7.30 p.m. on Friday, the .boats ran into a head wind, in which the Corona soon made good headway, leaving all the other boats behind anl also overtaking the keelers cn the way to Whangaroa. Shortly afterwards, however, calms were experienced and, the boats came to virtual standstill. ;■

Ultimately, after battling against the tide at Oncrahi, the Corona crept in at 4 p.m. on Saturday. No signs of other vessels could be seen as the Corona entered the, heads, although look-outs were sent up to the crossbeams to locate other boats.

Next to arrive was the Celox, which clocked in at 8.45, p.m., and. also reported having seen no sign of the other boats. At 11.45 p.m., however, the Venice crossed the line after a hard struggle with the tide. No Sign of Fifth Boat.

~ Owing to the Wairere having anchored off . Urquhart’s Bay on Saturday night, it is understood this boat will not count in the jace. No sign of the fifth boat, the Starloch, had been seen at a late hour last night, and it is presumed she discontinued the race.

The following handicaps had been posted for the race: Coi’ona, wind south-west to east, scr., wind west to north-east, scr.; Starloch, 21 min., 35 min.; Celox, 24 min., 40 min.; Venice, 1 hour 10 min., 2 hours 30min.; Wairere, 1 hour 20 min., 3 hours.
