TRADE TALKS GET UNDER WAY

The discussions between representatations of the New Zealand Government and members of the Australian trades delegation were begun yesterday afternoon. These will be continued today, and, in the interim, consideration is to be given to the question of Pacific shipping and the transTasman air service. * During their stay in New Zealand, the Australian representatives will be the guests of the New Zealand Government, and a State luncheon is to be given in honour of the Australian Minister of Trades and Customs, the Hon. T. W. White. Will Be Here Over Holidays. The date of this function is yet to be arranged. Present indications are that the visiting delegation will be in New Zealand over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. An official statement issued at the conclusion of yesterday’s discussions stated that the Minister of Customs, the Hon. W. Nash, and the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. | G. Sullivan, in welcoming the Australian Minister emphasised the determination of the New Zealand Government to maintain friendly relations between the two countries, and trusted that the negotiations would lead to more balanced trade to the advantage of the Commonwealth and the Dominion. Mr White, in replying, said that Australia 'Rad striven in the treaty of 1933 tc give New Zealand a maximum amount of trade in Australia, He appreciated the invitation of New Zealand to discuss the situation and saw no reason why the present difficulties should not be overcome and the) volume of mutual trade improved.
