Bay County Council

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Bay County was held on December 9, Mr H. T. Atkinson presiding.

G class permits were issued to Mr D. W. Hudspith for five trucks for the period ending February 28, 1938, and for the month of March an F class HG license for cream carting on his present cream route.

Cr. H. T. Bates was appointed to interview the harbour board relative to the provision of sanitary public conveniences at Kerikevi. The council resolved to consider any reasonable offer and contribute on a 50-50 basis.

A committee comprising Crs. Bates and Smith, with the clerk and engineer, was appointed to make recommendations for the redrafting of county by-laws with special reference to sanitation and building.

The council resolved to call tenders for the sale of all scrap iron owned by the council in various parts ox the county, the parts not for sale to be enumerated. Permission was granted Mr J, W. Cooper to haul log timber on the Otiria-Ngapipito Hoad subject to the usual royalty charges, plus the cost of repairing the bridge at Arnuta. The engineer’s report was adopted.

It was decided to write to the Okaihau Chamber of Commerce asking what sum the business people wore prepared to contribute towards their suggested scheme of tar-sealing the main road through the township.

Considerable discussion arose from a request from the proprietors of the Cathay Theatre, Kerikeri, and the Paihia Theatre, that they be granted permission to show pictures on Christmas night. The majority of the councillors were of the opinion that there were sufficient nights during the year to show pictures without encroaching on Christmas, and they were not prepared to set a precedent by granting the request, particularly as the programme submitted was not considered appropriate to the occasion. The motion to grant the request was defeated by five votes to three. The chairman and Crs. Bates and McKeown recorded their votes in favour of the motion.
