HIGH SCHOOL BREAK-UP FUNCTIONS
With the school year closing on Thursday evening, the pupils of the Whangarei High School have been occupied during the last week with several break-up functions. The boarders, in their annual concert in the Boys’ Hall, presented an enjoyable programme of music, mirth and drama.
Three pieces which attracted most attention were the mock court, before which several notable ladies and gentlemen were arraigned, the “Bum Coalsack” Choir and a farce composed by the Carruth boys and entitled “Rummier And Dubious,” or “As You Strike It.”
Two one-act plays, “Be Sure Your Sex Will Find You Out" and “Thread O’ Scarlet.” were competently presented by the girls’ and boys’ houses respectively. Tea and Theatre Party.
On Friday afternoon and evening, the girls held their first complimentary tea and theatre party. This entertainment, in honour of the girl prefects, form prizewinners land sports and drill champions was arranged by the third-formers and their mistresses. Sixty girls sat down to tea and, at the conclusion of the meal, games and competitions were herld. In the evening the party attended the Plaza Theatre, where the mistresses were the guests of the management.
Boys’ Annual Dinner.
The event of the year, so far as the boys are concerned, the annual dinner, was held last Saturday evening in Carruth House. This function is in honour of the school representatives, champions, scholars and boarders, and this year over 60 boys were entertained. Special guests of the evening were representatives of the Board of Governors, the Old Pupils’ Association, the Parents’ Association., and the masters. The headmaster, Mr A. R. Ryder, presided.
A number of toasts wore honoured and musical and humorous items were presented. The following was the toast list:

The Headmaster, Mr G. S. B. Morrison; reply by Mr Ryder. Musical Entertainment. During the evening two solos, j “Take A Pair ■ At' Sparkling Eyes,” j and “Red Devon,” were sung by Mr J. T, Shaw, and the boarders’ choir presented “Rocked In The Cradle Of i The Deep.” Violin 'and piano solos j were played by L. Wordsworth; and I. Johnstone respectively, and Mr E. H. Blow presented two humorous numbers. “Politics and World Affairs” and “I Like Them Fluffy.” Mr S. B. Dunn conducted several, rounds of community singing.
