F has been announced that Mr R. J. Estall has been appointed one of the three judges for the Sesquicentary Band Contest in Sydney next month, says a Christchurch message. Mr Estall will be sole judge at the Newcastle Band Contest for the Australian championship. This is the first time a New Zealander has been appointed to the position. Mr Estall is conductor of the Woolston Band, which has won many New Zealand championships.— (P.A.). fjpHIEVES who climbed over a barbed wire entanglement at the back of a building owned by Irvine and Stevenson. Ltd., the St. George Manufacturing Company, of 91 Hepburn Street. Auckland, on Saturday night, devoured a quantity of tinned rabbit, in addition to blowing open the office safe with gelignite. A cashbox containing approximately £5 in notes and. small change, and £4O in cheques, was stolen.—(Special). PORT record for gross merchant shipping tonnage was established at Auckland today. All the berths were occupied and four merchant vessels were awaiting at anchor in the stream. Excluding local coastal vessels, the aggregate tonnage in port was 167.462 gross, which is substantially more than the previous record of 152,468 tons established on October 29. —(Special).
