Musical Afternoon By Madame Rolfe-Smith’s Pupils

A musical afternoon was given b.y Madame Rolfe-Smith and her pupils at the Nok Nok Inn last Saturday. The hall was tastefully decorated with black and gold. A pianoforte duct was played by Jill Christiansen and Judy Bedlins-

Violin items were played by Georgonc Lyon. Avice Saul and Mary and June Newman. “Elfanlery,” by Henry Motl’at. was a splendid concerted item, played by six violins, with piano accompaniment. Madame Rolfe-Smith gave a delightful rendering of Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata,” and also of Chopin’s “Fantaisie-Impromptu.” Miss Joan Smithies, a pupil of Madame Brainsby, sang “Solveig’s Song” (Grieg), and “II Bacio” (Arditi). In response to an encore she gave Robert Batten’s “April Morn."

A surprise item was a bracket of songs from Amy Woodford Linden's selection. .“Lover of Damascus.” sung by Mrs Norman Johnston, of Kaikohe. As an encore, she gave an .interpretation of Frederick Drummond’s “Give Me Youth and a Day." Madame Brainsby thanked Madame Rolfe-Smith for the well-arranged and enjoyable afternoon, and complimented the performers on their work. She said that the recital gave evidences of the careful training the pupils had received. The hostess suitably replied.

Madame Bramspy presented the following certificates: —Grade 3. Bruce Thorne: Grade 4. Reina Bastard, lan Johnston; Grade 6, Gwen Cutforth; Grade 7, Grace Litherland. All hut one had passed with honours. Afternoon tea was served and bouquets were presented to Mrs Johnston and Miss Smithies by Jill Christiansen and Merle Dunn.
