U.S. FIGHT FOR FREEDOM OF THE AIR
(Received 10 a.m.)
WASHINGTON, December 8,
A series of criticisms of the alleged monopoly hold by Pan-American Airways over ocean services marked the opening of the fight for the “freedom of the air.”
Witnesses before the Merchant Marine Committee of the House of Representatives today urged that the control of ocean aviation be transferred to the Maritime Commission. They asserted that control by the Post Office tended to preserve the monopoly.
Mr John Slater, executive vicepresident of the Export Steamship Corporation, said that man-made obstacles were preventing shipping companies from entering aviation. He did not wish to detract from the PanAmerican Company’s development work, but he could find no precedent for rewarding a pioneer company with a monopoly. The chairman of the Maritime Commission, Mr Joseph Kennedy, before a committee of the Senate, urged that overseas aircraft should be given construction and operating subsidies similar to those given to shipping.
