SETTLEMENT PLAN FOR TE HAPUA NATIVES
Farm development work is to bo undertaken by the Government, with a view to relieving the situation of Maoris at Te Kapua. where it was recently revealed that some wore living under distressful conditions.
Twelve men and their families arc shortly to be transferred from this settlement to Ngataki, where it is intended they will proceed to break in 2700 acres, which will be subdivided into farms of approximately 109 acres each, for Maori settlement. Hutments are now in the course of erection to house the families being shifted from To Hapua. Recently the land, which fronts the main road north of Kaitaia and south of Ngataki, was transferred from the Crown Lands Department to the Native Department for the settlement of unemployed 'Maoris.
Little difficulties are expected ■in making the land suitable for dairy farming. The usual procedure of stocking portions of the area as soon as they are grassed is to be followed. This ensures that the land will be in good condition when it is thrown open for settlement.
