KERIKERI ORANGES RUSHED
The Kerikeri Citrus Society has been altogether overwhelmed by the public response given to their advertisement in the “Northern Advocate,” notifying that oranges would be sold in the streets of Whangarei. Captain F. W. Voelcker and Mr B. O. Edmundson, who left Kerikeri with 87 bags, of small fruit aboard a lorry this morning, were held up at mang points between Otiria and Whangarei by thirsty ' road gangs, graders drivers and members of the travelling public keen to purchase the oranges.
Finally, to keep faith with the public of Whangarei, they were constrained to ignore the possibilities of further trading.
Arriving ip town at 11.30, they proceeded to the Town Hall, obtained a vendor’s license and stationed their'truck
in Cameron Street. They j were immediately rushed by | buyers, and, ’within a few 1 minutes, had quitted all that
remained of their stock,
j Calling at the “Advocate” office, | they found a pile of orders from i people who had been unable to get i in to the auction, but had responded |to the advertisement, stating that j their requirements, addressed to Box 1210, would be delivered anywhere in I the borough tomorrow. ! The association apologises to cusI tomers .who were disappointed in i this way and gives an assurance that i all orders will bo honoured when a ! further consignment is brought down i tomorrow.
The oranges which are being sold are the last of the Valencia crop. Although smaller than those sold under the society’s “Golden Bloom” title, they are juicy and good eating. About 240 fruit are contained in the sugarbags, which are being sold at 5/6 each.
This is the first organised attempt the Ketrikeri growers have made to supply the Whangarei market.
One of the greatest haval nonstop, mass flights was successfully completed, when 14 new bombers, with personnel numbering 98, arrived at Colon (Panama), from Santiago, California. The journey of 3080 miles was made in 21 hours 30 minutes.
