OBITUARY

'Per Press AfSOffMor.. Cuvvrighu. ' DUNEDIN, This Day.

The death occurred in Dunedin yesterday of Mr John James Moikle, aged 93 years. Mr Meikle’s name had been frequently before the New Zealand public during the past 40 years. He was convicted at Invercargill in 1887 on a charge of sheep-stealing, and sentenced to seven years’ hard labour. On discharge, he proceeded on a charge of perjury against the witness who testified against him at the trial. The prosecution succeeded, and the witness was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment. Mr Meikle then petitioned Parlaiment for compensation, and in 1897 was granted £SCO in full settlement of his claim.

Since then, Mr Meikle, at intervals, had unsuccessfully petitioned succeedng Governments for further compensation, and when the present Government came into office he again, by petition, urged his claim.
