AGRICULTURAL TUITION FOR HIGH SCHOOL CLASS

Four farms in the district were visited by the Whangarei High School agricultural class during September.

The first to be visited was Mr H. C. Fraser’s property at Maungatapere, for the purpose of studying methods of pasture establishments and top dressing trials on grassland, which wore explained by Mr Fraser. Pasture identification was carried out on an area which is to be subjected to further manurial trials. At a later date the process will be repeated tc determine the effort of fertilising! The next visit was to Mr Hoban’s farm at Whareora, where a comprehensive series of grass strain trials has been laid down under the supervision of Mr E. B. Glanville, Instructor in Agi'iculture, Department of Agriculture. Mr Glanville conducted the boys over the trial plots, explaining the methods adopted from the original cultivation of the area up to the present time. He gave the boys a com siderable amount of instruction in pasture identification, and also emphasised the absolute necessity- of early white clover establishment ; on gum land. On Mr T. Griffin’s farm, at Kamo. Mr Griffin demonstrated the method of shearing a sheep and of rolling the fleece. He also gave a talk on the method of wool classing and detailed the points of a Southdown. He also explained the management of a stud flock of sheep.

Among other activities of the class, a visit was paid to the Whangarei Jersey Club’s sale, and Mr J. Green demonstrated a farm tractor, explaining the wox’king of the machine.
