Increasing Use Of Supreme Court

The returns for the Whangarei Supreme Court show 'an increasing use of the facilities available. When file court has a home and regular sittings are held here the work will be greatly increased. At present, actions are filed with the Registrar at Whangarei and transferred to Auckland for hearing.

The increase in the returns for the past quarter, ended September 30, is particularly marked. Figures for the three quarters since the local registry was opened, are given as under, with those for the quarter just ended in parentheses: Divorce applications filed, 4 (2); probates and letters of administration, 74 (35); chattel securities filed, 153 (63); debtors’ petitions in bankruptcy, 6 (3); sales of mortgages through registrar, 3 (nil); rating certificates filed, 3 (nil); originating summonses issued, 3 (1); writs of summonses issued, 10 (7); appeals against decision of lower courts, 2 (2), So far this year there have been seven adjudications in bankruptcy before the Official Assignee of the Northland district. For the corresponding period of 1936 there were 11 bankruptcies and for the full year there were 14.
