Crawford Tod Good Foi* Andrews (Received 12.30 Jim.) ' LONDON, June 23. On the third day of the British lawn tennis championships at Wimbledon, A. C. Stedman (New Zealand) beat Nigel Sharpe, the Englishman, who eliminated Cochet in the first round in ' 1331. ■' - I 0 On an otitside court, J. H. Crawford (Australia) mot E. D. Andrewes, who has a reputation as a “lion killer.” The New Zealander, however, was defeated in straight sets. Crawford, in his usual unhurried style, settled down to a long driving battle. The second, set was a great baseline duel, interspersed by volleying. There were seven deuces in the l?th game. Andrews “shot his bolt” in this set and Crawford had an easy passage in the third set, McGrath Gets Practice. V. B. McGrath (Australia)/,in the early games against D. C. Coombe (New Zealand champion) had pleasant piactice. He slacked off in the third set/and Coombe taking advantage of this, increased his speed, and playing vigorously, won a well-deserved set.

J. Bromwich (Australia) opened confidently against V. G. Kirby (South Africa). He won the first set by accurate driving. He slipped twice on the greasy court in the second set. Increasing his pace in the third and fourth sets, he forced Kirby into errors, Crawford and McGrath Go Under. C. E. Sproule (Australia) had a marathon encounter with the 21-year-pld South African, E. E. Fannin, whose steadiness won him the match. In the doubles Crawford and McGrath “a seeded” pair went under, owing to their uneven play, and the Czechoslovakian’s greater > speed and accuracy. Second round: Stedman beat Sharpe, 6 —4, 6—4, (retired); Crawford beat Andrewes, 6 —4, B—6,8 —6, 6—l; McGrath beat Coombe, 6—3, 6—3, 5—7, 6—2; Bromwich beat Kirby, 7 —5, 2—6, 6—4, 6—3; Fannin beat Sproule, 7—5, 3—6, X —6, B—6, 6 —o; Kho Sin Kie beat Wilde, 6—4, 4—6, 6—2, 3—6, 6—3; Menzel beat Hecht, 6—3, 6—3, 6—2; Prenn beat Cooper, 6—-1, 6 —2, 6 —4; Henkel beat Tinkler, 2—6, 7 —5, 3 —6, 6—o, 6—3; van den Eynde beat Eedes, 7—5, 6 —4, 6 —3; Grant beat Morton, 6 —2, 3 —6, 6—3, 6 —o; von Cramm beat Tuckey, 6—2,' 6—o, 6—4; Parker beat Brugnon, 6—o, 6—3, 6—4; Austin beat Sabin, 6—2, 6 —3, 6 —o; Budge beat Hughes, 6—2, 6—2, 6—2. Third round; Frau Sperling beat Fraulein Horn, 6—2, 6—o; Miss Jacobs (holder of title) beat Miss Heeley, 6 — 3, 6 — l. . Mixed Doubles. First round: Lee and Miss Dicken beat Coombe and Miss Lyle, 3—6, 6—4, 6—4.
