GRAVE MISGIVINGS IN LONDON
Snubbed By Cancellation Of Von Neurath’s Visit (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, June 23. Germany’s diplomatic offensive is regarded with the greatest misgivings in London, especially as it is coupled with such an abrupt snub as the cancellation of Baron von Neurath’s visit. Germany can hardly expect the invitation to be renewed. It is pointed out that Germany’s attitude contrasts with that of Britain and France, which made similar accidents, such as the mining of H.M.S. Hunter, of May 14, and the gunning of a French passenger aeroplane on May 26, the subject of peaceful representation.. Shadow of Doubt. Moreover, as “The Times” points out, a shadow; of doubt hangs over the alleged attack on the Leipzig. “The Times” emphasises that Germany her- , self, on June 15, condemned the rumours that the Leipzig had been attacked as unscrupulous in vengeonce. : ; , , [The paper adds: . “When Anglo-German discussions held out a prospect of deeper stability fpr % Europe, Germany lias chosen a curious moment to magnify the Spanish incidents. Small wonder if one suspects that she seeks to have the advantage of the French political confusions , “We wonder if Germany is repeat- ' ing her past errors by succumbing to the temptation of uncovenanted opportunism and ’making hostility to other nations the price of German friendship.”
