SCOPE OF CARRIERS’ ASSOCIATION
That all carriers should abide by the rules of the association, was the sentiment expressed at Friday’s meeting of the Whangarei Carrier’ Association, when recommending that the committee amend the rules to include town carriers. If they would link up, Mr D. Ferguson said, the six-mile exemption area could be done away with. The secretary, Mr C. Waymouth, advocated one association for both town and county carriers, Mr A. McFarlane, secretary of' the Bay of Islands Carriers’ Association, present by invitation, thought that men should be forced to join the association. With the co-operation of the licensing authority, he said, it should, be possible to make every operator tee the line. Mr Flower: What about the conscientious objector? Judged On Their Merits. Mr McFarlane said the authority had asked for the co-operation of local associations in reporting upon license applications. Bearing in mind, a recent Dargaville case, he would, however, say that the authority expected cases to be judged on their meris. If a man refused to join an association because of religious principles, yet was prepared to abide by the rules, then obviously the association would not oppose his application for relicensing. Shuld a non-member make breaches of the rules, however, ; the association would unhesitatingly submit an adverse report, and recommend the cancellation or review of the license —a recommendation that would certainly carry weight with the authority. After further discussion it was decided to recommend to the committee that" the rules of the association be amended to include town carriers.
