N.Z. Recover Well After Bad Start Against Lancashire

/\ (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, May 29. jPAGING the stiffest trial of the rso far, on a ground on which it will play England in the second test, the New Zealand cricket team opened inausplciously on a perfec t wicTket in the game against Lancashire. At stumps, New Zealand had scored 372 for nine wickets. The first three wickets fell in an h our and a half for 56. Wallace and Moloney then retrieved the position considerably, largely through another aggressive and b rilliant innings by Wallace, who hit six fours, three threes and only fiv e singles in an hour of attractive driving, hooking and cutting. Sixty- eight runs were added for the fourth wicket. -

► Weir Helps Moloney. i Weir stayed in long enough tc help Moloney in a partnership for 54. Moloney took over two hours to reach his half-century, but held the innings / together, being undisturbed by any of the bowleus. Donnelly assisted in a stand for 29 runs before falling to th' new ball. Moloney, after 220 minutes’ patient batting, with only three boundary strokes, was similarly dismissed. Lamason and Tindill were just settling down when a thunderstorm interrupted play for nearly half an hour. The pair then steadily compiled a valuable 57 runs in a timely partnership, neither being troubled by the attack, although scoring rate, was slow. Tindill Unbeaten.

Tindill was unbeaten for 38, after battihg for an hour and a quarter. New Zealand finished the day with the highest total of the tour, this performance seeming improbable at luncheon. The Lancashire team was—Lister, Paynter, Hopwood, Iddon, Oldfield, Watson, Place, Phillipson, Pollard, Duckworth, Wilkinson. One of the features of the day was the success o'f the new slow bowler, Wilkinson. The attendance w'as <pver 6000. Details of the scores are as follows: — NEW ZEALAND. First Innings.
