KAITAIA BOWLING CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the Kaitaia Bowling Club was held in Foster’s Rqoms on Friday evening. The president, Mr J. Pearson, presided, and there was a good, attendance. Mr W. H. Akins wrote resigning from the office of vicb-president, and asking that he be'not nominated for any owfice during the coming year.
President’s Report. The president, in his annual- report, stated that the green generally had shown an improvement over previous ‘ years. There had been' a noticeable improvement in the playing surface, and there was an absence of large bare patches. This was due to superior ' top-dressing soil and to the damp , season. Weed plarited last season was. spreading better than was expected and next year should cover most of the green. It was now apparent that this would provide a better playing surface than grass. It was anticipated that next season the surface of the green would be even better owing to further top-dressing and ‘ the possibility of obtaining a load from the town water supply. Besides ordinary tournaments during the year an Easter tournament had been held, visitors being present from Whahgarei and Kajkohe. Some members had attended the Whangarei tournament, but A Had gone down against superior play by other clubs. In the Buxton Shield competition, Gowie’s team were rurihers-up. The president spoke in highly complimentary terms of the good work done by Mr. C. McKinnon in keeping the green and flower plots in order. ,
Balance Sheet; The balance sheet showed receipts totalling £214 11/6, including subscriptions £l6l 14/ and contribution from Croquet Club, £45 # <6/. After meeting all expenses a credit balance if £l9 18/7 was shown and outstanding subscriptions totalled £9O 12/6. Honorary Members. Referring to honorary members, Mr Mclhtosh said it was necessary to be a member before a man’s wife could join the croquet club. The croquet club had been able to collect its subscriptions from its members, but the bowling club had not been able to collect its subscriptions. He favoured cutting out honorary members altogether./
Mr Peace said that £23 was owing by honorary members. Mr Logan said that about £6O was owing by playing members, and if they had that the position would be satisfactory. It was the playing members who should pay, and those who had not paid; by December should not have the right to play on the green, or vote.
Mr Lewis said they had been slipping back each year; and if a man did not pay his subscription there would be nothing wrong with the club putting up his name and itimating to him that he did not pay. 5 Mr Cowie moved that the rules in respect to unfinancial members be enforced. The motion was carried. Mr Peace said there were some who had handed in their debentures, which constituted a generous gift to the Club. If any rpan, after doing this, fell upon hard times, were they to prevent him from playing? Election of Officers, The following officers were elected: —. .Patron, Mr W. Vickers; president, Mr Smeaton; vice-president, Messrs Claassen and L. Morpeth; secretary, Mr F. Holley; auditor, Mr J. O’Sullivan; hon. solicitors, Messrs Logan and Reynolds; Green superintendent, Mr J. Cowie; grounds committee, Messrs C. McKinnon, A. G. Horsley and J. Bakalich; management committee, Messrs Mark Hammond, R, R. Lewis, A. G. Horsley, J. Bakalich, Galligher, W. Parker, P. Yendell; match committee, Messrs Hales, W. Farrimcnd, Claassen, Bidmead and Dyer; delegates to Centre, Messrs T. H. Stewart and A. Munn. , Honorarium For Secretary.
Mr L. A. Mclntosh moved that the secretary receive an. honorarium of £5 5/. In doing so, he said the job had net been too well done in the past, and, by allowing a small amount for the work, they would get better service. The motion was carried. General Items. The appointment of a greenkeeper was left in the hands of the management committee with a recommendation that the present greenkeeper be re-appointed. It was decided to hold a bowlers’ ball and a committee was appointed to organise the ball, consisting of five members—Messrs Knight, Morpeth, Bakalich, A. Wilkinson, Yendell. Lewis and Dyer. It was decided that the concession of £1 1/ to first-year members be withdrawn. The management committee was given power to make a levy not exceeding 10/ per member, if necessary. Selection Of Teams.
Mr L. A. Mclntosh brought up the question of the method of selecting teams for competitions. It had been the custom of the management com-
mittee to select the teams, but he thought they would get keener play if skips were called to form their own teams. Mr J. Cowie thought that for local tournaments the management Committee should select the teams, as by this method young players were given a chance. For travelling teams he agi'eed the skips should make the selection. Mr Hollay said a skip should not be j asked to accept more than one inex- I perienced player. ! Mr Claassen moved that for home I tournaments a skip be allowed to select three players and the match committee be empowered to select the fourth. The motion was carried. Mr Horsley urged that more halfday tournaments be arranged during the coming season and this was made a recommendation to the committee.
