ORANGES PRACTICALLY UNOBTAINABLE
Oranges are in short supply in Whangarei, and, as stock’s in Auckland have been practically exhausted, the position today is that this luxury (for at the ruling prices this fruit is a luxury) is practically unobtainable. It is stated that the embargo on Australian .oranges has not affected the position, as thete is no fruit in that country at the present time. A Whangarei fruiterer said this afternoon that efforts had been, made to obtain supplies from Auckland, but there were none available. c In Auckland it is stated that a definite shortage in the producing countries of the Pacific zone has brought about the shortage. It is S also stated that the Fijian shipments were later than usual, and | Californian oranges were short I owing to frosts. I The New Zealand-market is usually j "assisted by Jamaican oranges at this time of the year,'but, as the result of ] vessels not being available in the i middle of March, there was a consider- j _ able gap between arrivals. The next is due on April 19. Californian oranges will arrive on April 16, and. some Jamaican three days later, j It is expected that the market will ! be bare for two weeks at least. j
