Big Hui Marae At Dargaville
[Special To "Northern Advocate.”'] DARGAVILLE, This Day. Drawn from all parts of Northland and from as far south as Rotorua, more than 500 Maoris yesterday gathered on the Northern Wairoa Show Association’s grounds. The occasion was the culmination of nearly a week of a ceremony which is known as a hui marae, and one which has not been held in I Northern Wairoa for very many years. The purpose of the hui marae is the unveiling of monuments erect'ed to the memory of five Maoris, Heremia Topia, Motu Ihaka and three sisters, who'were drowned at Naumai some tiihe ago. Another significance is attached to the ceremony. The Maoris have listened to the legends and folk lore of the Polynesian people. The passage of /ears has been ripped aside, and tales and sacred stories which the older' generations were taught in a similar way many years ago are now being passed on to the younger natives, so that they, in their turn, may do likewise in the future, The unveiling service was held at the native cemetery at Mititai yesterday and in the afternoon a haka contest for the Coates Cup was staged and a large tennis tournament commenced
