Kawakawa

The annual meeting and election of officers of the Kawakawa sub-branch of the Plunket Society was presided over by Mr T. J. V. Dunlop. The committee’s report showed a very flourishing condition of affairs.

Nurse Thomas, visiting nurse from the Whangarei Society, also presented a very encouraging report, the number of children treated comparing well with all other centres. Consultations at the office were as follows: —Adults, 84; babies, 60; toddlers, and older children, ,17. There were 24 new babies during the half-year. Of these, 12 were from Kawakawa, 5’ from Moerewa, 2 from Paparaka, 2 from Towai, and 1 each from Taumarere and Tuhipa. Nurse Thomas reported several cases of under-nourished infants, all of whom are responding well to the Plunket treatment. A letter was received from Dr. M. B. Tweed, medical officer to the Dominion Society, congratulating the Kawakawa sub-branch bn it's success, and advising that he would be in the district towards the end of March, when he would be glad to address meetings on the matter of infant welfare. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs T. J. V. Dunlop; vice-president, Mrs A. Clifford; secretary and treasurer, Mesdames Rayner and Taylor respectively; committee, Mesdames Boswell, Kerr, Robertson, Cowley, Rear, Williams, McRae, and Jones. Mr T. J. V. Dunlop consented to again act as hon. auditor to the branch.

Mr T. J. Wall, proprietor of the Star Hotel, in line with the “Advance Kawakawa” campaign, is making extensive additions and alterations to his premises. This makes for a great improvement in the west end of Gillies Street, and is more consonant with the dignified appearance of the new theatre Impending improvements and renovations to several old properties in the near vicinity should make this an attractive quarter of the town. Renovation and alterations are being carried out on the Memorial Library and Town Hall, the builder being Mr F. A. Paul. Personal. Mrs T. Hanna, of Takapuna, is visiting "Kawakawa. and staying with her daughter, Mrs W. Andrew, of Station House. Mrs F. A. Paul is spending an extended holiday in Auckland. Mrs R. Mcßae, of Kawakawa. lias been appointed dressmaking instructor to the secondary department of the -District High School. Mr R. Tilson, a well-known farmer, of Karetu, has been appointed a delegate from the Kawakawa branch of the Labour Party to the annual conference of the New Zealand Labour Party, and leaves for Wellington on Tuesday.
