The New Zealand Bowling Association’s annual championship tourna- j ment opened yesterday with play in singles. The 280 entrants were reduced to 77. Of these 13, with five wins, the possible, qualified with two lives for post-section play today, 49 with four wins, and IS, .with /three wins, qualifying with one life. Of seven men who have won the singles in former years, and who are competing this year, all qualified. M. Walker, three times champion, was beaten by S. Sutton, Hawera, who, however, had only two wins. J. D. Best, 1925 champion, and W. Carswell, twice former champion, had five wins each. M. Engebretsen, 1935 champion, had a loss to T. Pollock, F. Livingstone, last year’s champion, also has one loss to J. B. Jack St. Johns, who failed to qualify. J. M. Brackenridge came through with four wins, being beaten by G. B. Evans. W. Foster, another former champion, qualified comfortably.
