RUSSELL

The Russell Bowling Club sponsored the dance held in the hall on Labour Day night. Special efforts were made to make the event one of the biggest and best functions of the year. Mr W. Rummins (dance organiser) acted as M.C. Owing to the overseas vessel Cumberland arriving at Opua at mid-day,-twenty junior members of the crew attended, making Opua and Paihia representation sixty. During the evening, the spot waltz was won by Miss Phyllis Boucher and partner, and the Monte Carlo by Miss Jean Bott and partner. The two cakes were drawn for, the winners being Mrs G. Whitelaw and Mr Lionel Stephenson. A handed-round supper was served to a crowded hall. After an outstandingly generous musical performance, the dance concluded at 1 a.m. Amongst those present were the following: Mesdames Roy Brooker, blue floral georgette; Horace Williams, blue crinkle crepe; Herbert Williams, backless black and white charmeuse, studded with diamante; Stan. McMarlan (Opu»), scarlet satin; E. Clark (Whangarei), strawberry crepe de chine; June Baker, orange marocain, with gold lame; Audrey Gibbs, midnight blue crepe de chine, with silver trimming; Inez Kelly (Paihia), silver thread marocain. Poppy Somerville, green , cloque and silver trimmings; Norma Williams, marina blue faille and silver lame; Nancy King, pique organdie; Mabel Englehardt, marina blue satin, with pink tulle; Dotris Newman, apricot crepe marocain; Thelma Rummins, blue satin; Beryl Hewitt, pink satin and gold lace; Maureen Callaghan (Maromaku), blue taffeta;, Esther Deeming, ruby crepe suede; Isobel Williamson, wine satin; Mybrae Neumann, floral taffeta; Thelma.
