KERIKERI

CHILDREN’S CONCERT

The first concert given by the pupils of the Kerikeri School was presented last Saturday night to a capacity house at the Pashun Fruit Factory. The excellent fare provided by the children was thoroughly appreciated by the large audience, and it is hoped that the high standard achieved will focus greater interest on the activities of the school.

The first half of the programme was devoted to items by the younger pupils and the tiny tots sang, recited; gave characterisations of nursery rhymes, and produced a little playlet, “HumptyDUmpty.” Although excellent coaching and splendid costuming played a large part in the success of this part of the programme, the small children themselves deserve the greatest credit for the spontaneity and easy confidence with which they carried out their acts. The interval was followed by songs, recitations and playlets by the senior pupils. The singing, led by Ellen Johnson earned prolonged applause. Ellen has a beautiful voice and here solo items were greatly appreciated. With training, her voice should hold a career for her. “Damon and Pythias,” a play in two scenes, by the senior boys, and “Blueboots,” a play by the senior girls, were very enjoyable, -the players showing great promise for future dramatic work. Mr Roberts, chairman of the school committee, thanked the audience for their appreciative attendance, and Messrs. Baker and McManaway and other members of the Kerikeri players for their assistance in coaching the children and in helping with the production. The two teachers, Miss Raines and Miss Bennett, are to be congratulated on their excellent production.

Labour Day Spores.

A record crowd attended the annual sports meeting at Kerikeri, which was held in brilliant weather on Labour Day. About 9.30 a.m., people from surrounding districts started to arrive at the Recreation Ground, and the widely assorted means of locomotion were evident. Cars, charabancs, ( trucks, horses and bicycles created a traffic jam which would have done credit to any city. The many events were run off without a hitch, and the Kerikeri Sports Committee are to be congratulated on the excellent organisation. The prize money was very attractive, and accordingly the entries were numerous. Results:—
