FINE CONCERT LAST NIGHT

Owing to uncertain weather conditions, the band concert last night was held in the Town Hall and also in the Plaza Theatre. The Town Hall was packed to the doors and the Plaza Theatre was well filled.

The bands performing at the Town Hall were the Onehunga Citizens, Whangarei Municipal, Mt. Eden Boys, Balmoral Boys, and Auckland Waterside Workers, and at the Plaza, the Whangarei Boys, Te Awamutu, Kaikohe Maori and Takapuna. The programmes were of a most entertaining nature.

At the Town Hall a demonstration of drumming by Drummer Burdon. of the Balmoral Boys, was a most appreciated item. The Kaikohe Maori Band delighted' the Plaza audience with a haka, and Bandsman Broadrib gave a mouth organ solo.

He caused much amusement by playing a tune with the instrument held behind his back. The secret was that he had a rubber tube concealed in his clothes and the rest was easy. Cornet solos by two of the Te Awa.mutu b*nd were other outstanding features.

At the conclusion of the concert at the Town Hall the various shields were presented by the Mayor, Mr W. Jones, who congratulated the bands on their fine performances.

Mr H. W. James, president of the Whangarei A. and P. Society, thanked the Auckland and New Zealand Brass Bands Associations for their part in staging the contest in conjunction with the gymkhana. Mr James said he felt sure that the contest would do a lot of good for Whangarei. Everything had proceeded very smoothly and there had been no hitches.

Mr James expressed the special thanks of the society to those public-spirited-people who had assisted in the billeting of the bands, as, without their help, the contest could not have taken place. Mr A. Franks, who was in charge of the billeting deserved special thanks.

Mr T. Gray, the judge, expressed his pleasure at having visited Whangarei for the contest and he paid a tribute to the work of the bands.

He mentioned especially the Kaikohe Band, which had done well for a comparatively new organisation, and was deserving of great credit.
