STRONG COMPETITION IN CHOPPING RING
Competition in the chopping ring at the gymkhana today was strong, fields were good, and public saw some exciting tussels. 'Results:— 14-inch Standing Chop.—W. Royal i (26sec), 1; T. Dunster (Bsec), 2; C. ■Child (20sec), 3. Time—l.ll. The first chop drew a field of 12, who included such notabilities as D. Hoey, the Kaikohe veteran of many a meeting during the past 12 years, A. Kinnaird and T. Dunster, both of whom work in Mr J. R. S. Richardson’s mill at Ngaruawahia, and who have competed in big events all over New Zealand, and the best of Northland’s axemen. Royal, the winner, comes from Pakotai. He was on a good mark and won easily, but there was a good “go” for the minor places. Dunster, well •back in tha handicaps, chopped well and just got there ahead of Child, who, in all probability, would have got second money had he put another couple of blows in on the first side. H. Kelly, off 26sec, was fourth.
14in. Underhand Chop.—Mahunga (255) 1, H. Kelly (255) 2, D. Hoey (8s) 3. Time, 1m 9 l-ss.—An exciting event, Mahanga just getting there by a fraction, with the other blocks being parted in rapid succession.
