Among officials responsible for the tunning of the band contest who left Whangarei today were the judge, Mr T. Gray, the supervisors, Messrs Gcprge Buckley and J. R. Williamson, and the secretary of the New, Zealand Brass Bands Association, Mr J. G. Osborne.
The Onehunga Band, which did so well at the band contest, was conducted by Mr Arthur Leatherby, formerly of Whangarei. He received an ovation at the Town Hall concert last night. His brother, Mr A. E. Leatherby, is in the Whangarei band.
Mr R. Arneil, secretary of the Aria Dairy Company, Te Kuiti, and formerly of the Hikurangi Company, arrived on Saturday to spend a holiday with Mr R. S. McKenzie, Tutukaka House. Mr Arneil conveys felicitations from the ■ Maniapoto Cricket Association, of which he is secretary, to the Whangarei association. Mr. A. Waterman, telephone mechanic, is resigning his position with the P. and T. Department, Whangarei, to take up a five-year appointment, as manager of Mrs. Ann Powell’s Criterion Hotel, Auckland. <jMr, Waterman, .who was with the department at Kaitaia before coining to Whangarei eight years ago, is highly popular throughout the North, in which he is so well known. A fast wing threequarter, “Alf” was chosen as a member of an All Black side which toured Australia, and assisted North Auckland Rugby teams on many occasions. He was a courteous and efficient officer, Mrs. Waterman (nee Miss Weir) is also well-known in the district, having for a number of years been in the office of the Commercial Hotel, Whangarei. Mr. Waterman terminates his ■ connection with the department on November 6.
