OBITUARY

MRS A. R. BRETT

[Special to “Northern Advocate”! AUCKLAND, This Day.

The death occurred on Saturday evening of Mrs Eva Laura Brett, wife of Mr Arthur Brett. Deceased, who was born at Russell 70 years ago, was a daughter of Captain Frederick A. Barker, an American shipmaster, who spent most of his long sea career on whaling vessels. On one occasion, Captain Barker’s ship was caught in the Arctic ice-pack, and he and his crew had to spend the long winter with the Eskimos, entirely cut off from the world. He had sailed from Russell, and was given up for lost by all except his wife, who every day climbed Flagstaff Hill and scanned the horizon for an incoming sail. At the end of 12 months. Captain Barker returned home, none the worse. Mrs Brett, wh|o was educated at San Francisto, later lived with her family at Devonport. Forty-six years ago she married Mr Brett, and during •a long residence at, Takapuna and later at Devonport, she took an active interest in the work of St. Peter’s Church and St. Augustine’s Church, Stanley Bay. ’ She is survived by her husband and two sons, Messrs. N. K. Brett and T. R. Brett, and two daughters, Mrs J. A. Taylor, of Wellington, and Mrs Nancy Brett-Patrick, There are six grandchildren.
