KAITAIA
DIFFICULTIES IN TREE-PLANTING. , j *•■ . - i With the development of Kaitaia, | new problems are .arising. One ot j these concerns the domestic cow. In j the old days, cows could be kept and j grazed anywhere without anyone raising much objection, but the position is very different today. With the number of cows wandering about the street or confined in paddocks, from which they can reach trees on adjoining land over a fence, the work of j the Beautifying Society is going to be difficult, and much more costly than it would be if the cattle nuisance had not to be reckoned with. It is not only the cattle domiciled in the town district, but those that are driven through the town to the country,, which have to be provided against, and unfortunately it is often necessary when driving cattle, to take thepi through at least part of the main street. It has been urged that Puckey’s Avenue should be continued on at the back of the Princess Theatre to Redan Street, and used as a stock route. This would give a great deal of-relief from the cattle nuisance, but to provide a stock route from the south would be much more difficult, and is something which belongs to the distant future. While cattle are allowed practically free movement about the town district, every tree and shrub planted must be protected, and the fencing or guards will cost more than the trees and their cultivation. Favourable Spring Weather.
Kaitaia has been experiencing some fine, mild weather, and the spring up to the present stage has been very favourable. Grass is coming away well on the hills, and generally, the conditions are very gratifying to farmers. On present prospects,, the season should be a good one. Farm Wages. Farmers are disposed to suspend judgment on the Government on the proposed minimum wage for farmhands till they know what they are to gain under the Mortgage Adjustment Bill, which will have, or is expected to have, a considerable influence on the farmer’s ability to pay the wages which are being fixed.
