MISHAP TO GOLD DREDGE

ISpecial to “Northern Advocate. 1 ”] HOKITIKA, This Day. While changing from one cut to another, the Rimu gold dredge yesterday sank on the port side and is now lying at an angle of 45 degrees in 15 feet of water.

There were six men on the dredge at the time, but all escaped without injury.

It has not been explained how the mishap occurred, but one suggestion is that the water ballast bulkhead at the stern broke away and flooded one of the midship compartments, overloading that side. Another suggestion is that the pontoon may be holed, but this cannot be ascertained until the dredge is righted and the pontoon pumped out.

On board there are several pumps capable of dealing with the water.

A start was made with salvage operations yesterday, wire hawsers being attached to the dredge to prevent further canting.
