MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS

POINTS FROM COUNCIL MEETING The Whangarei Borough Council met last, night, the Mayor, Mr. W. Jones presiding. RAUMANGA CREEK OBSTRUCTIONS J. A. and E. North asked the council when it was going to force property owners to clear obstructions from the Wairiki (or Raumanga) creek. The debris carried down by floods created blockages, which, in One case took a man half a day to clear. The acting town clerk reported that an inspection recently made showed that the conditions were good, except in a few instances. Notices, which had been sent requesting clearance, would expire'on August 22, and if the work had not been carried out, the council’s remedies under the Local Drainage Act would be proceeded with, The letter was received and the writers will be informed of the town clerk’s report. MELANESIAN MISSION PROPERTY

Mr. E. W. Thomson, writing on behalf of the Melanesian Mission and General Trust Board, said that he had been authorised by the board to offer the council a contribution of up to £ fOOO towards a scheme for the development of the board’s property in Selwyn and Fourth and Fifth Avenues. Any scheme would require to include a ■ complete sewerage and water reticulation, as outlined by the borough engineer, and also electric light rericulation and street lights. The board had decided to erect three or four modern dwellings immediately, and to push forward the development of the properties. The question was referred to the legal and finance committee. NEW VICTORIA BRIDGE The plans and specifications for the new Victoria Bridge provide for footpaths of a bituminous nature. Last night the engineer recommended that, tis the rest of the structure was of concrete, paths of such material would be more fitting. He recommended that one at leash of the footpaths be of concrete pre-cast slabs. The cost would be £125. The works committee recommended that the engineer’s report be adopted and this was confirmed.
