YEOMEN OF THE GUARD SHAVE THEIR BEARDS

(Received 2.30 p.m.) LONDON. July 10.

..Ninety out of 100 Yeomen of the Guard availed themselves of His Majesty’s permission to shave their beards imposed on them by King Edward VII. Some hesitancy was shown at first, but, when started, the example was speedily followed. Ser-geant-Major Lockver, formerly of the Royal Dragoon Guards, said that when, they appeared in mufti their beards were often a source of annoyance.

“People imagined us to be foreigners,’’ he said. “I have been taken for a French Cabinet Minister, a Russian prince and. an Italian officer.”
