LOW SCORING IN COUNTY CRICKET

TOWNSEND'S FINE FEAT

[United Press Association. —By Electric t Telegraph. — Copyright .] (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 10.

Rain seriously curtailed the series of county cricket matches which began on Wednesday. Naturally, in the prevailing conditions, there was some low scoring, four innings closing for 100 or less. Fine effort by T. W. J. Goddard, Gloucestershire’s powerful fast bowler, was responsible for Yorkshire’s dismissal at Bristol for 56. The home side scored, for five wickets, the necessary runs for a first innings victory.

Hampshire made 88 against Derbyshire; Notts, reached 100 only and fell to the weak , Northants’ XI. on the Trentbridge wicket, while Somerset’s second innings at Colchester realised 84.

The outstanding feat of the week was a remarkable innings of 153, unbeaten, by L. F. Townsend (the former Auckland coach), against

Hants, at Chesterfield. The position of the five leading teams remains unaltered. In order of championship points they are:—Derby, Kent, Notts, Yorkshire (1935 champions), Middlesex.
