RAWENE TOWN BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Rawene Town Board was held on July 2. There were present Messrs. T. W. McCown (chairman), and Messrs. T. S. Bryers. W. M. Cochrane, P. O’Donnell, and W. A. Neill. Mr Cochrane reported on one case of distress that needed assistance immediately. The chairman was authorised to follow up Mr Cochrane’s report by supplying necessary warm clothing for the distressed. Following a letter from the Minister for Internal- Affairs, it was resolved to plant more trees in Parnell Street, and to ask the schools to co-operate and plant the trees on Labour Day, trees to be ordered for the occasion.

It was resolved to protect the face of the road at the old mill site, damaged by the storm. The clerk was instructed to inquire about suitable stone and. if necessary, to call tenders for the labour. The clerk was instructed to order the pipes and fittings to give Spender’s a fire hose connection.

The clerk (Mr T. Millar) produced the balance sheet, and presented the estimates for the year. It was resolved “that notice be given that it is the intention of this board at its next meeting, to be held on Thursday, August 6, to strike and levy (1) a general rate of 5d in the £; (2) a water rate of Gd in the £ on all rateable properties in the Rawene Town District for the period commencing on the Ist April, 1936, and terminating 31st March, 1937,” on the motion of the chairman and Mr Cochrane.

It was moved by the chairman and seconded by Mr Bryers that Mr W. Cochrane and Mr T. C. Millar be appointed trustees for the Rawene Public Library, in lieu of Messrs. F. C. Hargrave and T. A. Wilson, who have resigned.

Accounts totalling £BO 0/7, on the motion of Messrs. Neill and O’Donnell, were passed. '
